Back Protection used to only be worn by hardcore skiers and snowboarders, including racers, big mountain and park riders, but the times are changing. Answer the questions below to find out if you're due for some modern protection!
| | | | Answer these 4 simple questions to find out if back protection is right for you! Many of these questions can also be answered by the employees within our amazing network of specialty retailers!
1. How often do I normally ride?
First timer: Hey that's okay, everybody was a beginner at one point. Not only are you at your most vulnerable phase of crashing, but you share the trail with many other, slightly out of control, beginners. Impacts from behind by other skiers or snowboarders are a very common occurrence.
Weekend Warrior: You worked your butt off this week, it's time to hit the slopes hard. The back is a little achy from the office chair and the 6hr drive in traffic.
Lifer: You literally sold your house to live in a van this winter... You want to make sure you're covered all year round no matter the conditions. Did you know that all SHRED. Back Protectors can be used after multiple crashes? So as long as the material is intact.
2. Where do I normally ski?
In-bounds: Perfect groomers and organized moguls are your jam. European resort skiers and riders have been at the forefront of the back protection boom, with Back Protectors becoming almost as common as helmets.
Backcountry: Some of the gnarliest hazards occur in the backcountry. From stumps, rocks, to crushing avalanches. We actually sponsor a backcountry program in Carbondale CO, after a student seriously injured himself landing on a stump! Comfort is key for the backcountry. FYI the IFSA (international Free Skiers Association) has made Back Protectors mandatory for all sanctioned competitions!
Park and Rails: From the streets to the park, hard surfaces are so prevalent including rails and knuckles. Most of our team riders prefer the secure feeling of the belt.
Gates: Soft & comfortable Back Protectors were actually one of our first inventions with our cofounder Ted Ligety (2x Gold Medalist & 5x World Champion). We recommend wearing a Back Protector no matter the event and the age category. SL crashes can be as bad as any other. Are you skiing mostly GS, SG or DH this winter? Make sure to upgrade to the highest protection standard (level 2 certified).
3. Have I crashed and hit my back before?
I'm a perfect rider and invincible: We bow down to you. What's your secret?
I do every now and again: Back injuries are less prevalent compared with knees and legs, but the consequences could be worse.
I have and was out for weeks because of it: It's time to invest in protection that could minimize the chance of being sidelined.
4. I already have a Back Protector, is it up to date?
Make sure you're not compromising protection with comfort and vice versa, there are many Back Protectors out in the market that won't meet your needs. SHRED.'s unique technology allows for uncompromised flexibility and protection.
Regardless if you choose SHRED. or not, it is key that you use a modern soft Back Protector that is certified according to the motorbike standard for back protection EN 1621-2 Level 2 (highest protection) or Level 1. There are many uncertified Back Protectors on the market, we suggest you don't even consider them.
