With every top-25 team wrapped up with spring practice and heading into summer workouts, here are On3’s biggest questions for college football’s top 25 teams exiting spring. Preseason top 25 rankings were used from On3.
1. Ohio State
Can the Buckeyes reload after sending another wave of talent to the NFL?
Ohio State has plenty of talent returning, including quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. But the Buckeyes lost key defensive pieces in Sonny Styles, Kayden McDonald, Arvell Reese, and Caleb Downs. Ryan Day addressed those holes in the portal, adding Alabama's James Smith and Qua Russaw, Florida State's Earl Little Jr., and Duke's Terry Moore. If those additions click and the offensive line takes the next step, Ohio State can contend for a national title.
2. Georgia
Is Georgia’s defense ready to contend?
The Bulldogs can't replicate the depth that produced five first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, but there's confidence in what's returning. Elijah Griffin, Xzavier McLeod, Josh Horton, and Nnamdi Ogboko anchor the front, linebacker Chris Cole is generating buzz, and edge rusher Chase Linton has turned heads. The secondary returns Ellis Robinson and KJ Bolden, with added depth from Clemson's Khalil Barnes, Oklahoma's Gentry Williams, and East Carolina's Ja'Marley Riddle.
3. Texas
After a busy offseason, are Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns ready to make a run at national title?
With Arch Manning returning, Texas went out and upgraded the backfield with Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown, then landed arguably the top portal player in Auburn receiver Cam Coleman. Sarkisian also brought back Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator after the Longhorns allowed 30-plus points in four of their last five games. Texas is built to win now, and nothing less is expected.
Pete Nakos has the biggest question marks facing all 25 teams in On3's preseason poll. See what's looming for the rest of the field at the link below.
