Marine Burucoa Dear Super Agers, I want to talk about three pillars of insight: Knowledge, the accumulation of information and experience; wisdom, the insight to apply knowledge with purpose and timing; and lucidity, which takes things one step further. For example, knowledge might tell you a relationship is harmful, and wisdom might guide you to stay silent during a heated argument. But knowledge and wisdom alone may keep you stuck in a rigid pattern. Just because we’ve stepped into a pothole before doesn’t guarantee we’ll avoid it next time. Innovation requires lucidity. It’s the ability to think clearly, gain fresh insights, and express them well through action, thoughts, or ideas. While age often brings a broader perspective and more wisdom, lucidity isn’t guaranteed. It demands ongoing mental presence and curiosity so we avoid mental rigidity, where we fall back on familiar stories and default scripts. The key message is this: growth depends on consciously breaking free from old habits and staying curious and present. Reflection, mindfulness, curiosity, and genuine interest are the Jedi skills of lucidity, or, said another way, the much vaunted crystallized intelligence. Many times, I have failed to up my game and fallen back into rigid thinking patterns, my personal pot holes in the road. The great thing about being human is that our brains have the power to change at any age, and it’s never too late to walk around those potholes and embrace clearer, wiser living.
