MLB's First Female Umpire Debuts Today: "A Groundbreaking Step"

In just a few hours, the first woman to umpire a regular season MLBgame will take her position on the field at Georgia's Truist Park. Jen Pawol, a 48-year-old New Jersey native, is set to make history when she works the Saturday and Sunday games between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. Pawol is no stranger to the game: She umpired NCAA softball from 2010-2016 before shifting to Minor League Baseball. "Once I started umpiring, I was like, 'This is for me,'" Pawol said in 2024, per CBS News. "I can't explain it. It's just in my DNA." Also last year, she became the first woman to umpire big league spring training games in 17 years. The MLB milestone is a "reflection of Jen's hard work, dedication, and love of the game," Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a news release. "She has earned this opportunity, and we are proud of the strong example she has set, particularly for all the women and young girls who aspire to roles on the field." The league's Umpires Association added: "This moment represents more than a personal milestone for Jen; it is a groundbreaking step for our profession and for the continued advancement of women in sports."

Ancient Hawaiian Petroglyphs Visible for the First Time in 9 Years Due to Ocean Swells
Nathan Wilkes/ U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii
Since it was first spotted nine years ago, a panel of ancient petroglyphs etched underneath the sand on a Hawaii beach hasn't been completely exposed — until now. Initially found by two Texan tourists in 2016, the potentially 500-year-old sandstone carvings were fully on display last month in front of a U.S. Army recreation center along Oahu's Waianae Coast. The 115-foot-long panel includes 26 carvings, 18 of which are human-like stick figures, with some reportedly over 8 feet tall and nearly 8 feet wide. Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner Glen Kila told the Associated Press he believes the largest figure symbolizes the rising and setting sun, and attributes the resurfacing to his ancestors sending a message "that the ocean is rising." Indeed, seasonal swells are to thank for the uncoverings: In both instances, amplified waves shifted sand away from the rock to reveal the entire panel. Amid the buzz caused by the recent exposure, the U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii's Cultural Resources Management Program is committed to preserving the sanctity of the area's traditional sites. "Stewarding these lands is vital to our mission," Cultural ResourcesProgram Manager Dave Crowley said in a release. "By protecting cultural sites like these petroglyphs, we honor Hawaii's heritage, build stronger community ties."

Artist Alexandra Grant Raises a Glass to Women Artists With Wine Collab

Something to toast to: Artist Alexandra Grant is championing other women artists through bottles of bubbly. Her initiative grantLOVE, which raises money and awareness for art nonprofits, teamed up with the woman-led J Vineyards & Winery to produce a brut cuvée — and each new bottling of the wine will feature a unique label designed by a leading female artist. The first LOVE Wine label was designed by New York-based artist Genevieve Gaignard, whose work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among other institutions. Grant, who also co-owns a publishing company with her partner, actor Keanu Reeves, tells Nice News that the wine collaboration has been a "life-expanding" experience. "The community we've formed around the project has been heartening at a time of immense social change," Grant says, adding that the grantLOVE and J Vineyards & Winery teams "share many values and are learning from each other about art and design on the one hand and flavor and harvesting grapes on the other — a true exchange." A portion of the proceeds from LOVE Wine will go toward artists and art education. Take a look at the bottle.

A novel approach
People experiencing homelessness may be hesitant to visit their local library, so one librarian is bringing resources to them. Through a mobile outreach approach, Los Angeles Public Library's Amanda Mellor is teaching those living on Skid Row about what the institution offers and signing them up for library cards. "I'm glad that hopefully more positions like mine will pop up in library systems around the country," she said in a social media video.
