If you’re a pet parent planning a road trip any time soon (perhaps a Route 66 anniversary journey?), you’re likely pondering whether to bring your furry friend along for the ride or leave them at home with a sitter. Read detailed advice from animal behaviorist Annie Valuska to help you decide.
New Monkey With Orange Lips Found in Congo Rainforest — Hear Its “Roar”
Daniel Rosengren, Frankfurt Zoological Society
A team of scientists has identified a new monkey species in the rainforests of central Congo — “one of the rarest discoveries in modern primatology,” according to a university news release. Dubbed Colobus congoensis and nicknamed “Likweli” by locals, the small monkey has a striking characteristic: a ring of orange fur around its mouth.
The journey to find Likweli began in 2020, motivated by sightings of a “mysterious” monkey roaming in Lomami National Park, per Yale Environment 360. After gathering photos, videos, and other evidence, researchers determined it was a new-to-science primate. The species lives in small groups scattered across just 650 square miles of forest, so the team is recommending the monkey be classified as endangered.
“This discovery is both exciting and deeply personal, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of my homelandand how much remains undocumented,” Junior Amboko, co-author of a new paper on the findings, said in a statement. “I was honored to name the species Colobus congoensis, recognizing the Congo Basin’s remarkable natural heritage and, we believe, marking the first primate named after the Democratic Republic of Congo itself — underscoring both its global importance and local pride.”
Another interesting trait of Likweli? Its distinctive “roar.” Check out footage of the monkey.

Shark or Smiley Face? Paint-On Sensors Make Health Monitoring Fun
Wanqing Zhang
A little whimsy goes a long way toward making unpleasant experiences less so, and it can be especially appreciated in health care settings (just ask a medical clown). To that end, a group of Penn State engineers decided to tackle a practical problem with a little extra pizzazz.
Detailing their design in a recently published paper, the team developed a conductive ink that can be painted directly onto the skin to power electrodes that monitor brain, heart, and muscle activity. Because the ink uses materials that bond better to the skin than those used in traditional wearable sensor devices, the system is more sensitive, accurate, and durable, per a news release.
“The ink itself almost behaves like face paint,” Larry Cheng, one of the study’s authors, said in a statement. “It starts out almost transparent, but you can use food dye to pigment the ink into whatever colors you need to paint whatever design you have in mind — like a cartoon or Superman. This allows us to completely personalize the wearable to a person’s preference.”
The team has filed a provisional patent for the ink and envision it having applications in the realm of robotic prosthetics as well. See more designs and watch how it conforms to the body.

Inside the 3 DIY Backyard Bars Competing for 2026 Pub Shed of the Year
TwoFatBlokes.co.uk / SWNS
There are beautiful watering holes all over the world, but a lighthearted contest is proving that your own home can be the coolest place to enjoy a pint. A trio of DIY bars built in backyard sheds by proud, beer-loving “sheddies” across Englandare battling it out to be named Britain’s Pub Shed of the Year 2026.
One is a traditional countryside-style pub and the others are sports bars — decked out with pool tables, dartboards, foosball, and table tennis. The finalists are going head-to-head to be crowned winner after being whittled down from more than 1,000 entries.
Paul Brimecome from Hampshire is in the running with The Pampered Chicken (pictured), an impressive creation made almost entirely from recycled materials. The pub-sport player’s paradise, which measures about 496 square feet and was constructed where a chicken coop once stood, boasts retro arcade games and a fruit machine in addition to a pool table and bespoke dart wall. See the other two.

Inspiring Story
A touch of hope
When Scottish couple Shannon Fernie and Gary Goldie welcomed daughter Hope at 22 weeks old last December, she weighed only 1.1 pounds. They spent her first four months in the hospital, watching staff put surgical tape on their newborn to keep her oxygen tube in place. Hope is now thriving, and her parents have launched Hope’s Tiny Tapes, which sells colorful customizable oxygen tape for babies and kids. They plan to donate a portion of their proceeds to the hospital. “Starting Hope’s Tiny Tapes is our way of giving something back and helping support the unit that cared for our daughter during the most challenging time of our lives,” Shannon said. See Hope smiling.
