People Over 50 in England Are Happier Now Than Pre-Pandemic, Study Finds

It's safe to say that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world — many of our lives look quite different now than they would if the health crisis hadn't hit five years ago. But a recent study made a surprising, and hopeful, finding about humans' ability to bounce back: Older adults in England are happier and more fulfilled today than they were before 2020. For 11 years, researchers tracked nearly 4,000 people over the age of 50 with three types of well-being in mind: affective (feelings of happiness), eudemonic (meaning and purpose), and evaluative (life satisfaction). While all aspects of psychological well-being declined in 2020, well-being levels "remarkably" rebounded in the years following. "Overall, older people are now happier, more satisfied, and have a greater sense of purpose than before the pandemic," lead author Paola Zaninotto said in a statement. As to why, Zaninotto has a hunch: "It perhaps could reflect a renewed appreciation for social connections and meaningful activities, as well as increased psychological resilience after a period of adversity," she explained, noting that the sense of security brought on by vaccinations may have also contributed to the positive shift.

Take Aging Into Your Own Hands
Is it too soon to think about how you're aging? Starting in our 30s, some key cellular processes begin to slow down, making us feel tired and weak over time. This decline affects not just our physical strength and endurance, but significantly reduces our quality of life, making everyday activities harder to enjoy. Luckily, scientists have discovered a way to shape how we age. Mitopure®, by Timeline, targets the root cause of this cellular decline and is clinically proven to increase cellular energy, giving our bodies the energy they need to function optimally. The results? Significant increases in muscle strength and endurance without any change in exercise. Get 30% off with code NICENEWS30 for a limited time, while supplies last.

American buffalo were nearly extinct by the late 1800s. But thanks to years of steady efforts to revive the iconic species, grassland ecosystems in the U.S. are now reaping the rewards of boosted buffalo populations. "Bringing the buffalo back to the land and to our people helps restore the ecosystem and everything it supports from the animals to the plants to the people. It's come full circle," Dawn Sherman told Native Sun News. She's the executive director for Tanka Fund, a South Dakota-based nonprofit that supports Native American family- and community-owned buffalo ranches. Since 2020, the fund has facilitated the return of more than 2,300 buffalo to Indigenous communities. Buffalo are a keystone species, meaning the balance of their ecosystem is highly dependent on their presence. The animals' return to their native habitat has helped revive some American prairie lands, Sherman said. "It's exciting to see buffalo go back on that land and see the ranchers caring for the soil, the plants, and the animals and watching them restore their piece of property back to the natural state," she added.

We introduced you to the rom-com-worthy love story of long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall and sprinter Hunter Woodhall in our Paris Olympics and Paralympics coverage last year. The two track and field gold medalists are known for being each other's cheerleader on the sidelines — but soon they'll get to take part in the same competition. The USA Track & Field Para National Championships will be combined with the Outdoor Championships this summer — a change that willput both athletes at the same meet for the first timesince their college days. "We have never had the same Team USA trials because able body and para have always been separated," the couple wrote in a joint Instagram post about the rule change, adding: "So grateful to see equality for everyone." The combined competition will be a first, and a rare moment to see athletes of all kinds do what they do best on the same stage. "This meet will be momentous for the sport because we don't often get the opportunity to showcase able-bodied and para sport side by side," Sherrice Fox, the director of Paralympics Track & Field, said in a statement.

A fairy-tale happy ending
The footage has spread far and wide on the internet: On Feb. 8, Adrián Simancas was seemingly swallowed by a humpback whale off the coast of Chilean Patagonia, only to be released seconds later. Now, he's sharing more about the wild experience — and a childhood tale that came to mind. "It was just a second, but it felt like more time," the 24-year-old said. "Because I was thinking a lot of stuff. I remembered about Pinocchio."

It's clear from this photo (and these) that the opening weekend to Venice's Carnival was quite the celebration, with heaps of confetti in the air and crowds gathered along the city's famed canals to watch a procession down the waterways. But what you can't tell from the images alone is that this year, all the confetti and streamers are fully biodegradable, per the Associated Press — a sustainable twist on the centuries-old festival.
