Study Finds Potential Breakthrough in Predicting Lung Cancer — And Preventing It

It’s a devastating fact that lung cancer results in more deaths than any other cancer — in part because it’s notoriously difficult to diagnose early, as symptoms like persistent coughing, fatigue, and shortness of breath are often ignored. Here’s where the nice news comes in: New research is showing promise that there may be a way to prevent the disease from developing in the first place.
In a study published last week, researchers identified 14 proteins in the blood that correctly predicted lung cancers more than five years before diagnosis. Not only that, but the team also found that an anti-inflammatory drug called canakinumab could lower lung cancer risk in people with elevated concentrations of these proteins.
“Prevention is the solution in my mind,” senior study author Dr. Charles Swanton told The New York Times, likening the medication’s promise to statins that can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke for those with high cholesterol.
While more research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of both the blood test and drug, it’s another piece of hopeful news in the cancer conversation, as the American Cancer Society has reported that a record 7 out of 10 of all cancer patients now survive at least five years after diagnosis.

Inside the Race to Clean LA’s Coastline Before the 2028 Olympics

In the lead-up to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, there’s a race underway to clean the coastline and ocean, where competitions like beach volleyball, open-water swimming, and sailing will take place. One of the tools ready to take on the challenge? Boat-shaped trash interceptors.
As the name suggests, the devices would be precisely positioned to stop trash that flushes down from LA’s urban rivers from ending up on beaches and in the ocean. The fully automated and solar-powered interceptors feature floating barriers and a conveyor belt that block and dump the garbage into six bins located in the centers of the vessels. A boat then hauls all the waste to a harbor and it gets transported to a recycling facility.
One interceptor from the Dutch nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup, dubbed 007, has collected more than 200 tons of trash since it was installed in an LA County stream in 2022. Now, officials are proposing adding two more, one in the Los Angeles River and another in the San Gabriel River.
“We want to make sure we present the very best of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and that includes a cleaner, healthier, more beautiful coastline,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson told the Los Angeles Times. Watch Ocean Cleanup interceptors in action.

Brewery and Library Collab to Serve Up George Washington’s “Small Beer” Recipe
The New York Public Library
Cheers to — and with — history! In honor of America’s upcoming 250th birthday, a New York brewery teamed up with the New York Public Library to brew beers inspired by a recipe from none other than George Washington.
The founding father wrote down the recipe for a “small beer” (small refers to its low alcohol content) in his military journal in 1757, during the Seven Years’ War. According to the NYPL, the drink was offered to troops as an alternative to water, which at the time was often contaminated.
Now, Talea Beer Co. is reviving the 269-year-old recipe with an amber ale called Washington’s Beer as well as another slightly modernized version of the drink dubbed Liberty Lager. “Our goal was to brew an approachable beer that nods to George Washington’s original recipe with subtle maltiness and a hint of hops,” Tara Hankinson, co-founder and co-CEO of Talea Beer Co., said in a statement. Read the transcription of Washington’s handwritten recipe and see the limited-edition cans.

Resilient role model
Taylor Nunez, a high school English teacher in Worcester, Massachusetts, was named the district’s Educator of the Year — a prestigious honor that came less than a year after she was diagnosed with ALS. “I tell my students, every single person we know has difficulties and challenges, their own unique heartbreak in their lives. Mine just happens to be very visible,” the 37-year-old said. “And I make a promise to them that I will always show however I can, give whatever is in my tank to them and hope they can meet me from where they are too.”
