Electric Planes Could Fill European Skies by the Early 2030s

Millions of people fly between London and Dublin each year — a popular short-haul plane route that’s being targeted as a potential opportunity for going electric. Aviation industry professionals expect European travelers to start boarding electric and hybrid flights as soon as the early 2030s, thanks to advances in electric motors, batteries, and aircraft design.
“Many people still think airplanes running on batteries are a distant dream,” Carlos LΓ³pez de la Osa, aviation technical manager at the European Federation for Transport & Environment, told Euronews. “But electric and hybrid flights are a core part of the solution to making short-haul travel more sustainable, and less dependent on imported jet fuel.”
According to the outlet, Europe is especially well-suited for electric aviation due to its stringent climate policies and the region’s dense network of cities and airports, which is ideal when considering the weight of batteries. The routes in the pipeline fall within a roughly 300-mile range, like Athens to Santorini, Barcelona to Ibiza, and the aforementioned London to Dublin.
Longer flights aren’t out of the question, though, as Dutch aerospace company Elysian Aircraft is developing a large-scale battery-electric plane (pictured here) that’s designed to carry 90 people over distances of up to 620 miles. New Study Shows How a Seizure Moves From Start to Finish

Researchers at the University of Georgia captured one of the first high-resolution videos of a seizure making its way through a brain in real time (watch it here). Using a newly developed light-sheet microscope, the team found that, in zebrafish, seizures start toward the back of the brain and move forward into the optic tectum, which is the midbrain region that manages eye movement and responses to visual stimuli.
Peter Kner, lead researcher and co-author of a recent study on the findings, explained that the new intel was achieved with the help of adaptive optics, a technology originally developed for astronomers to get a better look at stars. “When you look at the stars in the night sky, they sort of twinkle because the atmosphere is making the image wobble around,” he said. “It looks nice but it’s not great for astronomers because they don’t get a good, sharp image. Adaptive optics technology corrects that.”
In this case, instead of looking at twinkling stars, the researchers used the tech to get a clearer view of the brain, as it can often appear distorted in scans. “You always want the sharpest image you can get,” Kner said, adding that the research could pave the way for new treatments of brain diseases and disorders.

Alongside the 82% of Gen Z and 69% of millennials who keep some of their belongings at their parents’ home, 46% of Gen X — whose members are now between the ages of 46 and 61 — confessed to doing so as well. The survey also found that the average person using mom and dad’s house as an extra closet has around nine boxes stored there.
