The AI Optics Name Options Traders Bought Into the Selloff |
|
|
Last week's AI selloff knocked one of the key optical suppliers behind the AI data center buildout well off its highs. Options traders answered with a $2.3 million bet on a rebound. Here's the setup to have on your radar before the November earnings print. |

Finally, a Monday that doesn’t feel like one. |
|
|
Imagine a Saturday where you're not catching up on the CRM you didn't touch all week. |
HubSpot's new self-updating CRM doesn't wait for you to log back in. Friday's calls are already logged. The deal that needs a nudge Monday morning is already flagged. The automation you set up once keeps running without you thinking about it. None of it needed you over the weekend. |
Customers are already seeing it pay off: 45% more deals closed. Finally, you start Monday caught up, not behind. |

October 21 – Pre‑market Ticker: LITE | Sector: Technology (Optical Communications) | Market Cap: $74.5B |
|
|
|
|
30‑Second Take |
Why now? Lumentum (NASDAQ: LITE) makes the laser and optical components that shuttle data between AI chips inside hyperscaler data centers. |
The 800G and 1.6T transceivers it ships are the plumbing of every GPU cluster you've been reading about. When the AI-financing scare hit last week, the market dumped everything AI-adjacent. LITE got caught in the net. |
The stock lost about 25% in the five sessions from Oct. 9 to Oct. 16 and now trades in the low $800s, roughly 25% to 30% below the $1,143 high it hit earlier this month. |
Here's what caught my eye. Over Thursday and Friday of last week, about $50 million in unusual options premium hit LITE, and the bullish side outweighed the bearish side by roughly $25 million to $16 million. The biggest single print was a $2.3 million sweep of March 2027 $680 calls, bought at the ask on Friday. |
Someone with deep pockets sees this pullback as a gift. |
|
|
|
|
Trade Setup |
Time frame: Swing to medium-term (two to four months) |
Edge type: Oversold reversal with bullish options confirmation |
After a vertical move from $152.54 to $1,143 over the past year, LITE got dragged into the neocloud panic. The reaction was reflexive, not fundamental. |
Lumentum doesn't finance anyone's capex. It ships the parts and collects the check. And on Oct. 9, its CEO said AI demand has its capacity booked through early 2029. |
With bullish options money showing up while the stock sold off, you've got a setup where real money is disagreeing with the panic. Any dip into the $780 to $810 zone is where you want to be a buyer. |

1-Month Trading Summary: LITE is down about 13% over the past month. It climbed from the low $900s to a record close above $1,130 on Oct. 6, then gave back about 25% in five sessions from Oct. 9 to Oct. 16 as the AI trade unwound. |
Monday brought a small bounce of about 1%. |
The pullback had little to do with Lumentum specifically. Gartner's warning on AI spending and neocloud financing hit the whole group, higher bond yields added pressure, and Zacks cut the stock to Hold on Oct. 14. Volume ran above its 3-month average on most of the down days, and the bullish options flow tells you some institutional money is treating this as an entry, not a top. |
|
|
|
|
Bull Case |
Why It Works |
Every GPU cluster being built right now needs Lumentum's optical interconnects. That demand isn't going away because a Gartner report is worried about data center financing. Don't let the headline shake you out. |
More GPUs means more east-west bandwidth, the gear that lets chips talk to each other at full speed. That gear is Lumentum's bread and butter, which is why this matters to you. |
The Catalysts |
800G products are shipping into hyperscaler data centers now, and 1.6T is lined up behind them for 2027. |
Fiscal Q1 earnings land November 5, 2026 after market close, giving management a near-term stage to confirm the demand picture. A reassuring tone on hyperscaler bookings would be enough to short-circuit the panic narrative, so put that date on your calendar. |
What The Numbers Say |
Last quarter, revenue more than doubled from a year earlier, up about 109% to roughly $1.01 billion. For the September quarter, analysts expect about $1.25 billion in revenue and $4.21 a share in earnings, up from $533.8 million and $1.10 a year ago. |
On the options side, the headline trade was that $2.3 million sweep of March 2027 $680 calls, bought at the ask. Translation for you: a well-funded buyer paid up for a five-month bet that LITE stays well above $680. |
With the stock in the low $800s, those calls are already well in the money. |
|
|
Bear Case |
What Could Break It |
A big chunk of Lumentum's revenue comes from a handful of hyperscalers. In plain English, if one customer slows orders, the top line feels it fast. |
The neocloud concerns, while overblown for LITE specifically, could still push hyperscalers to be more cautious on near-term bookings. Fiscal Q1 commentary matters here. |
A cautious tone on the current quarter and the stock could retest last week's lows. Zacks already cut it to Hold, and the CFO has trimmed his stake in recent months. |
The Valuation Risk |
Even after the pullback, LITE is up more than 400% from a year ago. The chart is extended by any reasonable measure, and at roughly 38 times forward earnings, you're paying a premium multiple. |
If AI sentiment keeps unwinding, a test of the $650 to $700 zone isn't out of the question. |
How To Size It |
Start small and leave yourself room to add on further weakness. |
Scale in with a first tranche in the $780 to $810 zone, and keep a second ready for anything closer to $700. Don't go all-in on your first entry. Volatility this high rewards your patience. |
|
|
Quick Checklist |
✅ Thesis still valid after Tuesday's close (no new downgrades, AI selloff not resuming)
✅ Volume confirms real interest at current levels
✅ Options flow confirms bullish institutional positioning
✅ Fiscal Q1 earnings November 5, 2026 on your calendar |
